Jonas Govaert decimates scouts in Welp

On July 18th, the filming began of Welp, the first Flemish horror film, by Jonas GovaertWelp endorses the Belgian forest as a new cinematographic set for horror movies. To do so, it takes over an essential Belgian summer event: the scout camps. Like every year, young Sam goes into the forest with his scout group. A very imaginative child, he quickly cottons on to the danger when he discovers a mysterious cabin, visibly occupied by a wild child. When Sam warns his guides, they interpret his story as one of his usual ramblings and don’t take him seriously. But not only does the cabin hide a young boy, it soon appears that he is working with a dangerous psychopath who will be incredibly resourceful in order to kill young scouts.

Jonas Govaert, who is also known for his participation in the rock band The Hickey Underworld and for directing music clips for dEUS, is not taking his first shot at depicting bloodshed, since he already directed several particularly bloody short films. Welp is his first feature film, produced by Peter de Maegd from Potemkino, with the backing of the VAF and Wallimage/ Bruxellimage. The team actually set up an unusual crowdfunding campaign, which offered the possibility of funding scout traps.  Behind the camera, we find Nicolas Karakatsanis, the cinematographer notably of Left Bank, Lost Persons Area, Bullhead, and soon of an American remake of Loft. In front of the camera, a few young actors noticed in Flemish series or in cinema, Titus De Voogdt (22 Mei, Small Gods, Ben X), Stef Aerts (Smooverliefd, Adem), and Evelien Bosmans, who we will see this Autumn in Marina by Stij Coninx, as well as the imposing and scary Jan Hammenecker (Tango Libre, Mr Nobody, Ex-Drummer).

While you wait for its release scheduled for Autumn 2014, you can continue to follow Welp’s transmedia adventure on the project's Facebook page.
