France will be represented by two well-established directors: Bertrand Tavernier, 72, and François Dupeyron, 63; the two British productions have been made by directors from outside of the UK: Australian Jonathan Teplitzky and Roger Michell, born in South Africa, but living in England for decades.

Tavernier, in Quai d'Orsay, has adapted cartoon by the same name by Lanzac & Blain, a political satire featuring Alexandre Taillard de Vorms, the French foreign minister, who is always up for consorting with the powerful in order to consolidate his nomination for Nobel Peace Prize. Fourteen years after winning the Golden Shell with ¿Qué es la vida?, Dupeyron will be presenting Mon âme par toi guérie (after Un homme à part), on Frédi, who discovers he has inherited healing powers from his mother after she passes away. Written by Dupeyron himself, the film stars Grégory Gadebois and Céline Sallette.

With actors Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman and Stellan SkarsgårdThe Railway Man by Jonathan Teplitzky is based on the true story of Eric Lomax, a British official captured during World War II and sent to a working camp on a train track between Burma and Thailand.
