Lithuania sees its first feature film screened in San Sebastian

The Baltics will have a film in competition in San Sebastian for the first time as Ignas Jonynas’s The Gambler [+see also:

(Losejas) will be screened as one of the 16 features taking part in the Spanish film festival’s Kutxa-New Directors Award. It will compete with films from countries such as Greece, Romania and Holland.

The film follows Vincentas, a man who lives a dual life. On the one hand he’s the best and brightest paramedic in his company. On the other he’s a voracious gambler. Soon he finds himself with increasingly mounting debts and decides that an illegal game related to his work will be his only way out.

The Gambler stars Vytautas Kaniušonis (photo), Oona Mekas, Romuald Lavrynoič, and Jonas Vaitkus and is produced by Lithuanian company Studio Uljana Kim and Latvia’s Locomotive productions. The film was funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, the Lithuanian Film Centre, the Latvian Film Centre, Eurimages and the MEDIA Programme.
