CICAE training for art house exhibitors is back to San Servolo

For the tenth time, the CICAE training for upcoming art house exhibitors took place on the small island of San Servolo which is located only a few minutes by boat from the Lido, where the 70th edition of the Venice International Film Festival is taking place. The seven-day summer academy ART CINEMA = ACTION + MANAGEMENT is organized by the International Confederation of Art Cinemas, a network that brings together 3,000 screens in 24 countries, in order to prepare European art house cinema professionals and exhibitors for the challenges they have to face in different kinds of fields such as financing, operations, marketing, distribution, and new technologies. A part of the programme was dedicated to the challenges of the professions, windows and new economic models.

“I came as a student to the CICAE seminar in San Servolo three years ago, which was incredibly helpful”, says Jon Barrenechea, Project Development Manager for Picture House in the United Kingdom. “There are so many events in the film industry but the CICAE seminar is unique because it is the only workshop which is designed especially for the training of upcoming exhibitors.” This year, Jon Barrenechea came back to San Servolo as a speaker who joined together with German producer Alfred Hürmer, Slovak  media expert Ivan Hrone and Dutch exhibitor Raymond Walravens in the debate ‘The Arthouse Circuit’ on the chain of rights and the circulation of art films in Europe.

The debate on the chain of rights and the VoD continued with the panel “VoD, windows, circulation of European films: the role of the art cinema exhibitor today”, moderated by Detlef Rossmann, President of the CICAE. “It is urgent to figure out a way for the different distribution channels to not hurt each other, underlined Detlef Rossmann. “If we cannot solve this problem the whole film production is in danger. The producers have to understand that they will hardly receive any revenues if a central element in the distribution chain is gone because that also leads to lack of publicity for the succeeding windows. That is going to be a big problem for VoD.”

Altogether, more than 30 international film industry representatives gave lectures, presentations or joined workshops and panels at this ART CINEMA = ACTION + MANAGEMENT which was attended by over 80 participants from 20 different countries.

Supported by the MEDIA Programme of the European Commission, the German Federal Filmboard FFA, the French CNC, the Italian DGC, the MFG Baden-Württemberg, as well as the Venice International Film Festival, the Venice Film Market and the national networks AFCAE, AG KINO, FICE, CICAE has trained over 500 professionals and has been actively involved in promoting the diversity of artistic programming in Europe during the last ten years.
