(photo) scooped both the Golden Puffin in the New Visions competition and the international film critics’ FIPRESCI Award at the 10th Reykjavik International Film Festival, which ended yesterday (October 6).

12 international features competed for the main trophy, “and we were impressed by all of them,” said the jury, presided over by Italian author and political activist Luciana Castellina, and including former Icelandic president Vigdís Finnbogadóttir. “Still we decided to give the prize to Still Life, for its artistic quality, but also for the sensitivity and touching human message the director succeeds to underline.”

In his second feature the Italian count, a descendent of Luchino Visconti, former investment banker turned producer (The Full Monty/1997) and now director follows a council worker (Eddie Marsan) whose job is to find the next of kin of people who have died alone. His new case is his neighbour, an elderly alcoholic called Billy Stoke.

This year’s Reykjavik programme included more than 100 films, screening in 12 sections, among others a Focus on Greece, with a panel on its financial situation, similar to Iceland’s a couple years ago: The Economical Collapse and Cinema. Guests of honour were US director James Gray and Swedish director Lukas Moodysson, whose latest feature We Are the Best! [+see also:
