Vojnár started his career as a documentary filmmaker back in the 80’s and rose to prominence with the documentary essay In the Garden (1995) about patients in a mental hospital. His next project The prophets and poets (2000) was rewarded with an audience award at the International Documentary Festival in Jihlava. The director made his first feature film in 1997, The Route Through Forest, an episodic story about relationships in a small village at the eve of World War I.

An Unlikely Romance is told retrospectively by Luisa while she undergoes treatment in a mental institution. There she meets an elderly doctor who inspires her to look at her life differently. “I consider the main theme of the film to be a therapeutic relationship. Not necessarily in terms of a psychologist and patient but in general, when somebody helps another overcome something or simply move on... this is the crucial theme in all my films, features and documentaries,” explains the director who also stars in the film.

The film was produced by Ivan Vojnár Film in co-production with i/o post, Studio Virtual and Film Distribution Artcam, which will also release the film in Czech cinemas on November 7.
