Lanthimos and Chrysanthou secure Eurimages backing
- Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster reached the highest level of funding by Eurimage; Panicos Crysanthou’s The Story of the Green Line also tapped
Greek UCR winner Yorgos Lanthimos (photo) and acclaimed Cypriot director Panicos Chrysanthou were among the twenty filmmakers tapped by the Eurimages Fund to receive financial support for their upcoming projects. Lanthimos’ newest will be an Irish-French-Greek-Dutch coproduction, while Chrysanthou’s film will be coproduced by Cyprus and Greece.

film profile], which reached Eurimage’s highest level of funding and secured 460,000 euros, is a love story set in a dystopian future, where all single men and women are apprehended and incarcerated in the Hotel, a government facility where they are forced to find a partner within 45 days. If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing, and are then released into the Woods.
Co-written by Lanthimos and regular writer Efthymis Filippou, The Lobster is part of a two-film deal between the director and Irish production house Element Pictures. Element had approached Lanthimos shortly after his UCR winner Dogtooth [+see also:

film profile] struck the festival circuit, to offer him directing credits on a period drama then in development. Lanthimos, then looking to move to London, took a liking to their project, but offered to make The Lobster with them in the meantime.
The Story of the Green Line, which secured a 180,000 euro fund, follows a Greek-Cypriot soldier and his Turkish-Cypriot counterpart, guards of the Green Line which dissects the country, as their everyday interactions evolve into a deep bond of friendship. Panicos Chrysanthou, who remains one of Cyprus’ most active filmmakers, has also written the script for the film, which will begin shooting in early 2014.
