Cinema: a size XL economic sector

Presented yesterday by the CNC, a study by the BIPE reveals that the sectors of cinema, audiovisual, video and gaming production represented 16.2 billion euros in direct, indirect and induced added value (ie 0.8 % of the French GDP) in 2012, and over 340,000 jobs (1.3 % of French employment). The sectors funded by the CNC last year generated a direct added value of 8.5 billion euros, which is equivalent to that of the automobile industry (8.6 billion euros) and superior notably to that of the pharmaceutical industry (6.4 billion euros).

Last year, the funds allocated by the CNC amounted to 770.4 M€, that is 4.7 % of the global added value of the sector it backs: when the CNC injects 1 €, 21 € of added value are generated.

The specific cinema sector represents an added value of 6 billion euros. Based on the attendance of cinemas in 2012 (203.4 million admissions), a cinema ticket (6.42 euros on average) enables the generation of five times more that the initial amount spent. By way of comparison, the direct added value of cinema in 2011 (3.3 billion euros) represented 0.2 % of the French GDP versus 0.1 % (1.8 million euros) in the United Kingdom.

As for the Ficam (the Federation for Cinema, Audiovisual and Multimedia Industries), it unveiled the figures of the Observatory of Cinematographic Production for the first three 2013 terms: 152 feature films of French initiatives were filmed from January to the end of September versus 153 for the same period last year. However, investment is decreasing by 7%: the average budget going from 6.2 M€ in 2012 to 5.3 M€ in 2013 with a sharp increase for films with small budgets (between 1 and 2 M€) and a reduction by 38 % of the number of productions budgeted over 10M€. It is finally worth noting that the delocalization of filming decreased (21% versus 31% in 2012), producers having anticipated the reform of the tax credit validated in July by the European Commission and its retroactivity to January 1st, 2013.
