November is the month for European cinema in Spain. Beyond the Seville Film Festival, which this year will be launching into its tenth edition running on November 8-16, Segovia will be celebrating its own eighth edition of European film festival the MUCES. The series of events will include presentation of 91 films from 23 different European countries (18 of which are low-budget, making each of those screenings events to be followed in and of themselves).

As per tradition, its official section - a non-competitive one – will present the best in European production, as yet unseen in Spain. This section will be characterised by its size (36 films) and for its mission to divulge quality cinema, beyond the usual logics that condition traditional festival selection processes. Films shown include previously awarded ones such as Romanian Child’s Bear by Calin Peter Netzer (Golden Bear in Berlin) and the Spanish Story of My Death [+see also:

by Albert Serra (Golden Leopard in Locarno).

Moreover, the official section will also include ten films selected for the LUX award of the European Parliament, including its three finalists: Belgian The Broken Circle Breakdown [+see also:

Just as the case is set to be in Seville, MUCES events will pay tribute to special guest of honour Portuguese cinema. Portugal will be present unilaterally during the festival, with four films in the Official section, a retrospective of six films, a window dedicated to writer José Saramago and his ties to cinema, and two conferences, one on Saramago and the other on Portuguese cinema and its relationship to Spain.

The vast programme will be completed by sections “Lo nunca visto”, which will screen special, unreleased pieces of work, “Cine documental”, “Rodada en Segovia” and “Una de las nuestras,” dedicated to the best in recent Spanish production.
