INSTITUTIONS France

Upheaval at the Cinémathèque

by

Employees of the French National Film Library, the Cinémathèque, convened in a general assembley on Friday 4 April to protest against the reforms to the hallowed insititution’s Charter introduced by the new board.
The reforms budget cuts associated with next year’s scheduled move to the Cinémathèque’s new home in 51 Rue de Bercy in Paris and staff saud they were "unwilling to accept the budget cuts that are a direct consequence of bad management in the past".
The employees are calling for guarantees that their jobs will be safe and want to see changes made to the system according to which new managers are appointed. They also want the Cinémathèque to become more independent of its current supervisory bodies, the CNC and the French Ministry for Culture. This protest is also a serious j’accuse for Jean-Charles Tacchella, the president of the Cinémathèque. The next meeting is scheduled for the end of April when it is likely that the French minister for culture will attempt to restore calm and order.
