D-Cinema's ready to go

by

Project "35201" will be presented to the world with a series of special events at the Cannes Marché that runs concurrently with the Cannes Film Festival from 14-25 May 2003.
The project is the brainchild of Marinastudios, whose goal is to supply mixing and mastering equipment for Digital Cinema (D- Cinema) built to the precise specifications and requirements of the European sector. The company will carry out more research into and development of D-Cinema, especially the integration of the various techniques that are currently available.
D-Cinema is a revolutionary new film projection system whereby films are no longer screened on reels of traditional 35mm film stock but stored on a server and then beamed – via satellite – to a digital projector. The quality of sound and pictures is excellent and the problem of degeneration that occurs as each successive print is produced is eliminated.
MarinaStudios has offices in London and a studio in Portofino in Italy, and the company is currently finalising tests at Europe’s first cinema specially built for screening D-Cinema products. The THX D-Cinema Studio lies at the heart of Project "35201", and it was developed in partnership with EVS-Digital Cinema, Barco, Euphonix, Steinberg, Dolby, Panasonic, THX and HP.
Audio post-production has a fundamentally important role to play in D-Cinema because it is the last link in the Digital Master production chain,” said Cristiano Solari, the MD of Marinastudios Italy. “Until we came along no one in Europe was able to manage audio, images and mastering contemporaneously in one location, and thus be able to check the final result before distributing the product to digital cinemas.”
