A great start for the 8th Rome Film Market

The eight edition of the Rome Film Market begins today under a good sign: the number of badge holders attending The Business Street (TBS) and New Cinema Network (NCN) has increased by 6%. Once again this year, Via Veneto will be hosting the two events, which will, however, be sharing the same venue for the first time in 2013: the Hotel Bernini Bristol. While the terrace will be the rendezvous where buyers and sellers accredited to TBS meet to network and hammer out film deals, the hotel’s first floor will accommodate the coproduction meetings for the 24 projects selected by NCN.

During five days (November 13-17), around 700 professionals will watch, talk, negotiate, sell and buy films. New coproduction partners will be found and lots of networking will happen. At its 8th edition, regardless of the global economic crisis, the market can definitely say that it has become a key event on the international film industry calendar.

Apart from the talks, pitching of projects and market screenings (Barberini Cineplex), the 2013 edition brings about a series of conferences that deal with some of the hottest topics in the film industry.

The first event on the program this year, scheduled for Wednesday, November 13, at 18:00 at the Hotel Bernini Bristol, will be the presentation of “ITALIA. New Distribution Fund”, during which Silvio Maselli (ANICA) will explain the workings of the new distribution fund created to promote the distribution of Italian films in territories such as Latin America, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, by means of a special ‘Made in Italy’ promotional tool.

On Thursday, November 14, at 9:30 at the Casa del Cinema, the current situation and possibilities of the new models of distribution will be analyzed at the debate “The Digital Distribution Era: New patterns of film circulation and consumption”. It will focus on the pros and cons of the day-and-date, multiplatform/multi-territory release, and the VoD marketplace in Europe. The discussion addresses whether VoD is capable of becoming a primary source of revenue for content owners.

On Friday, November 15, at 10:00 at Casa del Cinema, Michel Magnier, Director of Culture and Creativity at the D.G. for Education and Culture of the European Commission, and Silvia Costa, S&D and rapporteur of the Programme in the Committee on Culture and Education of the European Parliament, will present the new EU Programme Creative Europe (2014-2020), with a technical focus by Giuseppe Massaro, Head of MEDIA Desk Italy.

Later on that same day, representatives from the Irish and Italian film industries will talk about the possibilities of coproduction between both countries at the debate “The re-launch of coproduction between Italy and Ireland”, that will also feature a case-study on Rosella De Venuto's Controra – House of Shadows (2013).

The conference program will wrap up with China Day, which will comprise several events spanning November 16 and 17, such as a series of meetings with Chinese producers and buyers dedicated to coproductions, investment in Italy and distribution of Italian cinema on the Asian continent.

The Business Street has been coordinated by Massimo Saidel in collaboration with Francesca Palleschi and Markus Duffner.
