New Cinema Network has established a successful reputation on a national and international level

24 projects, more than 150 professionals (producers, directors and investors) and over 750 one-to-one meetings. These are the figures of the recently closed 8th edition of the New Cinema Network (NCN), the coproduction forum of the Rome International Film Festival. This edition has also been a new opportunity to consolidate the collaboration with its most significant partners: Sundance Institute, Cinéfondation Atelier and Residence de Cannes, Film London.

For the fourth year in a row, Eurimages, the Film Fund of the Council of Europe, entrusted the Jury of the NCN, composed of Marie-Pierre Duhamel, Sandra Hebron and Dorien van de Pas, with the task of selecting the winner of the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award: a cash prize of 30,000 euro for the development of the best project presented at NCN.

Cineuropa has talked to the coordinator of the New Cinema Network, Alexia De Vito, about the recently closed 2013 edition and the future of the coproduction forum.

What is your assesment at the end of this 2013 edition of the New Cinema Network?
Though it is still early to declare a concrete balance, this year’s edition of NCN was definitely a positive one. We received many applications, even from Italian producers and directors, which was a pleasant surprise since it means that NCN is establishing a successful reputation for itself on a national level, as well as an international one. There was also great participation from the attending producers even before the selection of projects was announced, another sign that industry professionals trust NCN.

How would you define the NCN?
New Cinema Network is the creative hub of the Rome Cinema Foundation dedicated to the support of new independent filmmaking and talents, cross-media projects, international co-production and co-financing networking, cinema and related arts world-interconnecting-platform. NCN is a workshop and market where new international film projects are presented. It is a networking opportunity for the players of the European and international cinema industry, who can find profitable co-producing and co-financing opportunities.

Which are the main aspects you would like to improve for upcoming editions of the NCN?
We definitely want to reinforce our relationship with TBS, and involve their participants more in our activities.

Personally, which are the most satisfying aspects of organizing NCN?
When a project that has participated in our co-production market becomes a finished film, recognized within the film market circuits. And of course, on a personal level, when we receive positive feedback from the participants, who recognize the potential of NCN and its efficiency.
