Julio Medem and Penélope Cruz combine forces in ma ma
- The first collaboration between the Basque filmmaker and the Madrid native will take place next spring in Spain
The Basque director Julio Medem has released some details from his new and much anticipated work, which will feature Penélope Cruz as an actress, but also as an executive producer. ma ma (the title of the film) will also be the first collaboration between the two most well-known Spanish artists abroad.
Los Angeles was torn between the two. After Cruz had been around for a while, Medem burst onto the scene in 2010 when he moved to the city of angels to develop new projects geared at the international market, rather than those limited to the Spanish one. The film, which is in a pre-production phase, will be shot next spring entirely in Spain and in Castilian, as the production press release announced.
Screenplay for ma ma, written by Medem himself stars Magda, who, confronted with tragedy, reacts by becoming full of vitality – to an extreme. “Together with her loved ones, she lives unsuspected moments of humour and delicate happiness,” the production said.
The cast will be completed by Luis Tosar and Asier Etxeandia. The original score will be composed by Alberto Iglesias, a three-time Oscar nominee, and faithful Pedro Almodóvar collaborator. The production will be taken care of by Cruz and Medem in association with Álvaro Longoria for Morena Films.
