27/01/2014 - The number of independent productions increases after 2013 when no grants were given by the National Film Centre

After 23 releases in 2013, the number of domestic films brought to Romanian cinemas in 2014 is expected to be 20. After a 2013 year during which no grants were given by the National Film Centre, the number of independent productions will increase in 2014.

The first Romanian film released in cinemas is Ovidiu Georgescu’s Ultimul zburator, inspired by old incubus legends and with a premiere synchronized with Valentine’s Day. Spring will come with one of the most eagerly awaited titles, Nae Caranfil’s Closer to the Moon [+see also:

film profile] will be released after winning the Special Prize of the Jury in Rome. Cornel Gheorghita will release his Romanian-French co-production The Gentleman from the Courtyard.

Dan Chisu, the most prolific independent director, will release Non-Stop, while Transilvania Film will release the ultra-low budget coming of age drama The World Is Mine, the first feature by Nicolae Constantin Tanase. Another independent film expected on the big screen is George Dorobantu's Omega Rose, a post-apocalyptic SF. Comedies will be represented by Thomas Ciulei’s 2+2 and Razvan Savescu’s first feature America, Here We Come!, while the action genre has a chance with Nap Toader’s 03. Bypass.

Doru Nitescu will release Carmen [+see also:

film profile] in spring, after a world premiere in Sarajevo. Other first features scheduled for release are Gheorghe Andrei’s It Takes Two to Fence, Andrei Cohn’s At My Father’s Home, and Dragos Iuga’s The Little Spartan.

The old guard of Romanian directors will try to impress the audience with new features: Dan Pita, Alexa Visarion, Serban Marinescu and Dinu Tanase have new projects ready to be released this year.
