Tudor Giurgiu is currently shooting his third feature, Cristian, which may become a new genre opener in Romanian cinema: the political thriller follows the story of its title character, a young and idealistic prosecutor who makes every effort possible in order to crack a case against a senior colleague accused of corruption.

Starring theatre actor Emilian Oprea in his first lead role in a feature film, Cristian sees its protagonist entering a danger zone paved with painful revelations as he searches for the truth. Other characters are played by Mihai Constantin, Andreea Vasile, Dan Condurache, Virgil Ogăşanu and Liviu Pintileasa.

Produced by Giurgiu’s own company, Libra Film, Cristian (a working title) has a budget of €1.13 million and will wrap production in a few days. The co-production companies are Chouchkov Brothers (Bulgaria) and Cor Leonis Films (Hungary). The film is produced by Tudor Giurgiu, Oana Giurgiu, Borislav Chouchkov and Emoke Vagasi. Tudor Giurgiu wrote the screenplay together with Loredana Novak, and Marius Panduru is the DoP.

Shooting began in February, with Bucharest and the city of Oradea as locations.

In 2011, the project received a production grant from the Romanian National Film Center. The project was also supported by the Bulgarian National Film Center, the MEDIA programme, Eurimages and HBO Romania.

The domestic release is scheduled for next spring.

Yesterday it was announced that Giurgiu’s next project, The Closeness, received a production grant of €450,000 from the Romanian National Film Center (see news).
