White Gate by Nicolae Mărgineanu

The 13th edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival (30 May-8 June) will screen 22 new Romanian productions in its traditional Romanian Days sidebar. Twelve features and eight short films will compete for awards, while two other feature films will screen out of competition. Four of the films are world premieres.

Nicolae Mărgineanu has just finished production for his White Gate, a period drama set to feature in the sidebar. The film is about two young men who are sent to a labour camp after trying to flee the country in 1949, during the first years of the Communist regime. Corneliu Gheorghiţă will make a return to TIFF with his second feature, The Crypt, about a French businessman (Serge Riaboukine) trapped in a courtyard in a deserted neighbourhood of a Romanian provincial town.

"This daring, intense and heartbreaking documentary is my personal discovery within this year's Romanian Days selection," said TIFF artistic director Mihai Chirilov in a press release.
