03/06/2014 - The cinema remix festival kicked off yesterday and will run through June 6

The third edition of the Mashrome Film Fest, the international festival dedicated to mashups and cinema remixes – the only one of its kind in Italy - opened yesterday in the Orologio theatre. The festival is four days of immersion (events will end on June 6) into the world of innovative and experimental cinema, to the tune of contamination art, featuring many new filmmakers and some illustrious names.

Numerous guests are taking part from around the world: first and foremost, British director Peter Greenaway who will be the main feature at the Lectio Magistralis on June 6 at the Ara Pacis auditorium. Other guests include Istvan Horkay, collaborator on Greenaway and author of various experimental films and Norwegian web series author Matt-Willis Jones. The films scheduled include Le Grant (Music category) by Luca Lucchesi produced by Wenders Music by the famous German director Wim Wenders, and Isaac (Feature category) by Federico Tocchella with photography by Daniele Ciprì (E’ stato il figlio [+see also:

The festival kicked off on June 3 with a tribute to filmmakers from around the world who express, through the language of cinema, an original and creative take on our time. Among the selected pieces of work are In Chicken Veritas by Linda Fratini, a brilliant female comedy with surreal characters, and Melody of Cradel by Iranian director Hasti F.Saadi, where the main character is a woman returning to her place of birth after a long time away.

On June 4, the attention is to shift onto horror, noir, pulp and science fiction films. Among these, Whispers, with a main character who is trying to emulate the world of animation and become his idol Uni Man, and Blind Lucky, which tells the story of a Tarantino-like disagreement settling.

On June 5, space will be given to social and current affair themes: Memoria (e) Tempo by Stefano Volante, a remix documentary on Italy’s history; Crude Processions by Karina Griffith, a journey through the carnival festivities across various Latin American countries; Not Anymore: A Story of Revolution by Matthew VanDyke, an award-winning film documenting the Syrian war through the eyes of a young rebel and a journalist. The day will come to a close with current affairs web series, including The Samaritans by Salim Keshavjee from Kenya, which tells the story of a fictitious NGO and its “humanitarian” activities.

The afternoon of June 6 will be dedicated to the screening of a selection of films from two partner festivals: Turin’s VIEW Conference, Italy’s first digital art and new media international festival and the Athens Video Art Festival, also a digital art and new media international festival. On the same day, among the out of competition sections, Cinema Queer will be given its own space. The festival will come to a close on June 6 with an award ceremony and a performance by the Pollock Project, an art-jazz ensemble, which has made audiovisual mash-ups its signature style.
