Director Kevin Allen reunites with his Twin Town star Rhys Ifans for Under Milk Wood [+see also:

, principal photography for which is underway in Solva, Wales for six weeks. Murray Lachlan Young, Allen and Michael Breen adapted Welsh icon Dylan Thomas’ work, which began life as a radio drama in 1954 and later became a stage play and then was the basis for a 1972 film by Andrew Sinclair, starring another Welsh icon Richard Burton, and Elizabeth Taylor

The film is set in the fictional Welsh seaside town of Llareggub (to be read backwards). Ifans plays the narrator and singer Charlotte Church co-stars, with rugby star Gareth Edwards and politician Neil Kinnock in guest appearances.

It is a S4C, Goldfinch Pictures and Ffatti Ffilms co-production and it will air on S4C over Christmas and will see a worldwide theatrical release elsewhere. Metro International Entertainment will handle international sales. Allens and Ifans are producing alongside Stephen Malit (London – The Modern Babylon [+see also:

Allen said, “We want to veer away from delivering a dull, literal reflection of Thomas’ original work, intending instead to explore some of the more erotic, visceral elements of the richly funny, filthily fluid, magical dreamscape – whilst not stooping to mess with Thomas’ original text.”

2014 is Dylan Thomas’ centenary year (he was born in 1914) and therefore the BBC has also produced a star-studded television film featuring Michael Sheen, Church (in a different role from what she’s playing in Allen’s film), Tom Jones, Ioan Gruffud and Jonathan Pryce
