film profile] will have its world premiere at the 71^st Venice International Film Festival between 27 August and 6 September. The film will screen out of competition, and as a special treat, the festival will also show Nymphomaniac: Volume 1 [+see also:

film profile] – Director’s Cut, which was launched at Berlin, so audiences on the Lido will be the first to have the opportunity to watch von Trier’s five-and-a-half-hour version of the erotic epic.

In Nymphomaniac, French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg plays the lead as a 50-year-old self-confessed nymphomaniac describing her erotic experiences to the man (Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård) who finds her in a back alley after she has been beaten up. The all-star ensemble cast comprises Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman and Connie Nielsen.

The two-part feature was originally released on a double bill in Denmark on 25 December last year in a four-hour variant, which the director had allegedly not seen – the final cut was left with the film’s editor, Molly Malene Stensgaard. Danish international sales agency TrustNordisk has licensed the film to more than 50 territories, including the US and most of Europe.

Von Trier’s 12^th feature was produced by Louise Vesth, for Zentropa Entertainments, with Bettina Brokemper for Zentropa-Köln, Marianne Slot for Slot Machine-Paris, Bert Hamelinck for Caviar-Bruxelles, Arte France Cinéma and Swedish regional film centre Film i Väst. In Denmark, Gainsbourg won the Danish Film Critics’ Bodil Award for Best Actress, and the film took 50,046 admissions for Nordisk Film Biografdistribution.
