The Netherlands Film Festival came to a close this weekend in the city of Utrecht, and the Dutch national film awards, the Golden Calves, were handed out once again.

Two coming-of-age films by young directors were the big winners of the year, with Michiel ten Horn’s second feature, Aanmodderfakker [+see also:

, taking home statues for Best Feature, Best Actor (Gijs Naber) and Best Screenplay (Anne Barnhoorn), while the first feature Nena [+see also:

, a bilingual Dutch-German film, won Best Director (Saskia Diesing) and Best Actress (Abbey Hoes).

Aanmodderfakker is something of a surprise winner at the festival, especially since it hasn’t been released yet: September Film will release the feature on 27 November. Nena stands to gain the most from the surprise wins, as it was released by Cinéart on 11 September and is thus still playing in Dutch theatres.

, by Oscar-nominated director Paula van der Oest (Zus & Zo), was submitted by the Netherlands for consideration for the Oscars this year but apparently did not please the Golden Calves jury; it only got a nomination for Best Actress (Ariane Schluter) and didn’t win anything.

Besides Nena and Aanmodderfakker, the third nomination for Best Feature went to Heaven on Earth by Pieter Kuijpers, in the Limburg dialect, and the film finally went home with Golden Calves for Best Supporting Actress (Lies Visschedijk) and Best Production Design. Best Supporting Actor went to Ton Kas in the film Boys [+see also:

, by director Mischa Kamp, and that film also went home with the Dutch Film Critics’ Award.
