film profile], a drama about Itzo, an ambulance driver who must fight against a dangerous gangster in order to be with the woman he loves. The feature is staged by Magic Shop, with Georgi Nikolov serving as producer.
Stoyan Radev plays Itzo, the 35-year-old driver who picks up the bodies of the recently deceased and transports them to the morgue. Although he could quite easily strike up a relationship with Mimi (Lydia Indjova), a friendly lady who works at the mortuary, Itzo is really in love with Katya (Teodora Duhovnikova), the domineering mistress of Rocco (Mihail Bilalov), a violent mafia boss. The protagonist will soon realise that in Katya’s life, there is room for only one man.
The project, scripted by Marin Damyanov, received a grant from the Bulgarian National Film Center, and the film’s budget amounts to approximately €480,000. Shooting took place in Sofia over 30 days in March and April, and post-production will be finished by the end of the year.
Dimitrov told Cineuropa that he chose to make Corpse Collector his debut feature as he was attracted by the “brave” and “edgy” story. “It has a lot of psychology and symbolism in it, and all that is presented in a very light-hearted way with a bit of humour here and there,” he said.
The domestic release is set for 2015.
