Iberians' Triumph in Malaga

In a weekend when five Spanish films or Spanish co-productions went head-to-head with US blockbusters like X-Men, and made it into the local Top 10, the 6th edition of the Malaga Film Festival was won by Pablo Berger and Torremolinos 73.
Co-produced with Denmark Torremolinos swept the boards in Malaga, taking home best director, film, actor - Javier Càmara and actress Candela Peña.
Torremolinos 73 is a comedy about a married couple who are persuaded to star in Scandinavian porn films, and is set during the Franco years. The film was released domestically on the long-weekend of 1 May.
The Malaga jury of international film industry players like Andrea Occhipinti, Leonor Watling, Edmundo Gil, Jaume Figueras and Ramòn Salazar also gave a special mention to Tiempo de Tormenta by Pedro Olea, who also won the best screenplay nod.
Tomàs Cimadevilla, who produced Torremolinos 73 described Malaga as “one of the best Spanish initiatives after the Goyas” and this year’s edition focused on the importance of developing the national film industry and on the fact that it manages to produce excellent and competitive titles despite the current crisis.
