A tribute to the past

The second tribute to our film heritage, organised by the Cannes Film Festival, will open on Wednesday 14 May (contemporaneously with the Festival proper) with the screening of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalì’s Un chien andalou, restored to its original glory by the Spanish Film Library.
The tribute also features 15 classics of world cinema, ten of which will be screened on 35mm with the other five on high definition degital video. The selection was made together with the curators of the world’s leading film libraries, archives and production companies and includes Jean Renoir’s La Marseillaise (1938), Ettore Scola’s C’eravamo tanto amati (1974), This Sporting Life by Lindsay Anderson (1963), The Gospel According to Matthew by Pier Paolo Pasolini (1964), Dolci inganni by Alberto Lattuada (1960) and the animated feature, Le roi et l’oiseau by Paul Grimault (1980).
Cannes will also present a number of documentaries about cinema, four of which dedicated to Federico Fellini : La double vue : la dolce vita et le néo-réalisme by Belgian André Delvaux (1960), Ciao Federico by England’s Gideon Bachman (1970), L’ultima sequenza by Mario Sesti (2002) and Federico Fellini by Carmen Piccini (2003). Other documentaries featured include Charlie , the Life and Art of Charlie Chaplin by American Richard Schnickel and Lester James Peries, cineast d’un autre temps by France’s Julien Plantureux.
Cannes will pay tribute to French film director, Claude Sautet with a special out of competition screening of a documentary directed by N.T. Binh, produced by Les Productions Bagheera with France 2 Cinéma and co-produced with Germany.
