The Lego Movie highest earner of 2014
- Box office drops 2.9%, the biggest fall since 1991
Animated film The Lego Movie was the highest earner at the UK and Ireland box office, collecting £34.3 million, while The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies took £33.5 million, according to figures released by Rentrak. The Inbetweeners 2 was the highest placed British film, in third place with £33.3 million. The only other British entry in the box office top ten for the year is Paddington at number seven, a co-production with France that has earned £27.9 million so far.
The total box office was in excess of £1.1 billion. However, amidst the box office cheer is the sobering fact that the UK and Ireland box office suffered a 2.9% decline in 2014 from 2013, the biggest percentage drop since 1991. And, no film managed to crack the £40 million barrier. 2013 saw Despicable Me 2 collecting £47.4 million while UK/US co-production Les Misérables [+see also:

The outlook for 2015 is not all doom and gloom. The release slate is packed with event movies and leading the pack is Sam Mendes’ latest James Bond offering, Spectre [+see also:

film profile] is the all time UK box office leader with £103 million. Other big-ticket releases include Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, both UK shot projects.
