The film revolves around real-life figure Michiel de Ruyter, who was one of the greatest innovators in combat engineering of the 17th century. He is also a Dutch national naval hero famous for his role in the Anglo-Dutch Wars and is played by 42-year-old actor Frank Lammers in the €8 million big-screen production.

A-Film distributed the movie in over 130 theatres, in two versions: one for over-12s and a different one for over-16s. The latter includes eight seconds of additional images that were judged too shocking for younger audiences.
