Organised in partnership with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs’ Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Visions Sud Est fund and, this year, the Georgian National Film Center, the Focus section of the Visions du Réel Festival in Nyon is intended to give audiences a glimpse of documentary filmmaking in a southern or eastern country. The target audience for this rendezvous consists of the general public, who are always eager to discover difficult-to-access productions, as well as audiovisual professionals, who on this occasion will be able to meet and converse with the myriad directors, producers and representatives of the various Georgian institutions that will be in attendance.

“Georgia produces top-quality films. We invite our viewers on a voyage to the heart of this country that, over the last few years, has demonstrated it has incredible creative momentum,” explains an enthusiastic Luciano Barisone, director of Visions du Réel. In addition to the 15 documentary films produced over the last ten years that will be screened during the nine-day festival (17-25 April), the Doc Outlook-International Market (DOCM) (which every year welcomes over 1,000 audiovisual professionals) will give another six films at different stages of development the chance to be presented and discussed during the unmissable Focus Talk meeting day. The six lucky participants were selected via a competition announcement and will have the opportunity to win the Visions Sud Est Award, worth 10,000 CHF.

This year, the jury will comprise Thierry Jobin (director of the Fribourg International Film Festival), Martial Knaebel (of Trigon-film) and Ananda Scepka (head of the Open Doors section of the Locarno Film Festival). Featuring among the 15 films that will be screened are The Machine Which Makes Everything Disappear by Tinan Gurchiani (winner of the Directing Award: World Cinema Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival) and Pirimze by Sophia Tabatadze (presented as a world premiere).
