Norway's Brothers marks the first local opening of Oslo’s Eurodok

For the first time, a Norwegian film will open Oslo’s Eurodok – European Documentary Film Festival: Norwegian director-cinematographer Aslaug Holm’s Brothers [+see also:
film profile] will launch the programme of the gathering’s 14th edition, which boasts 24 documentaries and will unspool at the Cinemateket in Oslo’s Film House from 18-22 March. Besides Brothers, another 13 Norwegian documentaries will screen at the gathering.
Produced by Tore Buvarp for Fenris Film, the titular brothers in Holm’s film are her own sons, Markus and Lukas – now 14 and 11 years old – whom she has filmed over a period of eight years, “to go into the children’s real world and discover truth and original life”.
With the aim of showcasing “the best of contemporary European documentary filmmaking”, the festival has selected ten European documentaries for the Eurodok competition, spearheaded by Austrian director Ulrich Seidl’s In the Basement [+see also:
film profile], which depicts what Austrians do while ensconced under their houses.
His fellow countryman Nikolaus Geyrhalter spent ten years filming a group of people in a small village for Over the Years [+see also:
film profile], in order to follow what happened when the textile factory where they all worked was closed down. Meanwhile, US director Gabe Polsky’s Russian title Red Army tells the story of Russia’s national ice-hockey team, which was top of its class in the 1980s.
In Polish director Hanna Polak’s Danish-produced, award-winning Something Better to Come, she has spent 14 years filming a group of children living at one of the world’s largest dumps, outside Moscow. In addition, German director Marc Bauder’s Master of the Universe [+see also:
film profile] portrays leading German banker Rainer Voss.
Prior to the festival, Seidl – whose In the Basement was premiered at last year’s Venice International Film Festival – hosted a master class on Monday (16 March) for the Norwegian Film Institute’s NFI:LAB.
