The day has come when Nielsen finally returns to feature filmmaking

Actor Lars Mikkelsen will play one of the lead roles in The Day Will Come

On the Danish island of Funen, Danish director Jesper W Nielsen has started a nine-week shoot for The Day Will Come [+see also:

film profile] (2009). Since then, he has directed numerous episodes for five television series, including Borgen (2011-2013), The Seaside Hotel and Dicte (2014).

Scripted by Danish screenwriter Søren Sveistrup, who created the award-winning series Nikolaj & Julie (2002-2003) and The Killing (2007-2012), Nielsen’s €4.2 million drama will reunite Danish actors Lars Mikkelsen and Sofie Gråbøl, who were both in the first season of The Killing and who are both returning from international assignments.

Mikkelsen has played the villain in Sherlock for the UK’s BBC, and performed (as the Russian president) in Netflix’s House of Cards and in Nordisk Film’s European thriller series The Team, while Gråbøl has appeared in Sky Atlantic’s Fortitude as well as on stage in Edinburgh and London, where she was Scottish Queen Margaret in James III.

Newcomers Harald Kaiser Hermann and Albert Rudbeck Lindhardt will make their on-screen debuts as two brothers who are taken away from their sick mother in Copenhagen and placed in an orphanage in provincial Gudbjerg, where time stands still – even in 1967, the days of the new youth culture. The principal of the orphanage knows exactly how to change unruly boys into obedient citizens.

Also starring Lars Ranthe, Søren Sætter-Lassen, Solbjørg Højfeldt, Sonja Richter, Paw Henriksen and David Dencik, The Day Will Come is staged by Peter Aalbæk Jensen, Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Louise Vesth for Zentropa Entertainments, with Film i Väst and Zentropa International Sweden.
