Tell Spring Not to Come This Year victorious at DocumentaMadrid 2015
- The British documentary has gone home with the top prize from the 12th edition of the international doc festival, which was held last week in the Spanish capital
On 8 May, a jury comprising Paulo Roberto de Carvalho (Brazil), Tomás Cimadevilla (Spain) and Marlene Dermer (Peru/USA) awarded the first prize of the 12th Madrid International Documentary Festival – DocumentaMadrid 2015 to Tell Spring Not to Come This Year [+see also:

film profile], directed by Saeed Taji Farouki and Michael McEvoy, “for its humanity and courage to show the unresolved Afghan conflict from within”.
The second prize went to Hanna Polak (Denmark) for Something Better to Come [+see also:
film profile], “for the filmmaker’s commitment to the main characters and the ability of the human being to survive”, according to the jury. The Special Jury Prize was bestowed upon Vladimir Tomic for his work Flotel Europa [+see also:
film profile] (Denmark/Serbia), “for its ability to create a universal story based on a personal experience”. A Special Mention went to Cartel Land (USA/Mexico) by Matthew Heineman.
The audience voted for The Look of Silence [+see also:
film profile] by Joshua Oppenheimer (Denmark, Indonesia, Norway, Finland and the United Kingdom), which will hit Spanish movie theatres in July, distributed by Avalon. The most voted-for short film was the German title Symbolic Threats by Mischa Leinkauf, Lutz Henke and Matthias Wermke, while the Canal+ Award for Best Spanish Documentary was handed to Después de la niebla, a co-production with France, directed by Luis Ortas.
In the shorts sidebar, the official jury – Argentina’s Manuel Abramovich, Italy’s Massimiliano Nardulli and Spain’s Silvia Venegas – opted for the Cuban title El enemigo by Aldemar Matías, whereas the second prize went to 10 by Marta Jurkiewicz (the Netherlands), and the Special Jury Prize was granted to The Conversation by Anastasia Novikova (Russia). The Special Mention went to the Polish production Starting Point, directed by Michal Szczesniak.
