Danish major Nordisk Film is to open a new Swedish production company in Stockholm with three seasoned Swedish producers – Anna Croneman, Anna Anthony and Charlotta Denward – to make “high-quality films with a strong audience appeal”, it was announced yesterday (15 May) at the Cannes International Film Festival.

As part of a Nordisk offensive in the Swedish market, Avanti Film will deliver feature films and television drama from original stories – productions that the three producers think are currently lacking in Swedish cinemas.

“The talent is there, but the projects aren’t – the really big films, those that unite high quality with a large audience potential. They often have high budgets and have been difficult to finance in Sweden. With this investment, we show we want to contribute, and change the situation,” explained Allan Hansen, CEO of Nordisk Film, which is headquartered in Copenhagen.

Nordisk announced recently (26 February) that it would also be collaborating with Swedish regional film centre Film i Väst and Swedish pubcaster SVT to co-finance and co-produce films with budgets between €3.4 million and €4.5 million, or twice the average of a local production.

”Swedes want to see Swedish films in the cinema as well as on other platforms. We want to give them the best, both mainstream and edgy,” said Denward, former production chief at Svensk Filmindustri, and head of production/distribution at the Swedish Film Institute.

A former co-owner of Memfis Film, where she worked for almost 20 years, Anthony has produced all of Swedish director Josef Fares’ films; she has also co-produced outside Sweden, with her titles including Danish director Susanne Bier’s Oscar-winning In a Better World [+see also:

Croneman has mainly focused on Nordic television drama but has also produced a raft of Scandinavian and international features by, among others, Norway's Sara Johnsen, Denmark’s Ole Christian Madsen, the UK’s Michael Winterbottom and Romania’s Radu Muntean.
