Stockholm Film Festival launches SEK 1 million Impact Award

With support from the City of Stockholm, the Stockholm International Film Festival will this year launch a new international competition for the Stockholm Impact Award, which comes with a SEK 1 million cheque (approximately €110,000) to back the winner's upcoming projects.

The new prize – one of the world's largest – will not replace the traditional 7.2 kg Bronze Horse, but should attract between seven and ten international entries from “headstrong visionaries who reflect our contemporary world”.

"Scheduled after Toronto and the American Film Market, Stockholm is in many ways an ideal platform to present a new film – we have had a great experience with high-profile directors, who have enjoyed the distinctive Nordic ambience here," said festival director Git Scheynius

This year unspooling between 11 and 22 November, the festival – which generally programmes more than 200 films from 60 countries – will include seven to ten competition entries “at least 72 minutes long, which are having their world, international or European premieres at Stockholm”.

Scheynius wants to welcome strong filmmakers who dare to challenge burning social issues, such as integration, equality, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender questions. The festival has an even larger prize, the Feature Film Award, which goes to a female director: it comprises SEK 5.4 million (approximately €585,000) in cash and services for her film project.
