Lithuanian films screen to passengers at Vilnius Airport

While the tradition has always been to enjoy an in-flight movie, passengers travelling through Vilnius Airport can now enjoy a “pre-flight movie”, thanks to the airport movie theatre Film Box LT.

The free theatre in the airport serving the Lithuanian capital was instituted in cooperation with the Lithuanian Film Centre and is currently showing Lithuanian shorts (live-action, animation and documentary) curated by Lithuanian Shorts, the Baltic country’s short-film agency. The screening schedule is arranged into three programmes and currently includes The Noisemaker, a short that has already proven popular on the festival circuit after premiering at Locarno; Paradise Road, a documentary about one director’s fascination with Swedish filmmaker Roy Andersson; and the multi-award-winning animation Non-Euclidean Geometry. The programme will be refreshed regularly, and Film Box LT hopes to add feature-length films in the future. All titles are shown in Lithuanian with English subtitles.

“We are very excited that the airport has let Lithuanian cinema and the works of young filmmakers in. This is one of the finest examples in Lithuania and elsewhere of how business and cultural institutions can cooperate by focusing on the feelings and experiences of people, rather than profit,” said Liana Ruokytė-Jonsson, one of the people behind Film Box LT, and head of the Film Promotion, Information and Heritage Department at the Lithuanian Film Centre.

The Film Box LT movie theatre is located in the newly renovated departure area of Vilnius Airport, next to gate A2. Its opening hours are dependent on flight schedules, with films shown from the first to the last flight of the day.
