Cowen: Netflix heading for 7 million subscribers in Italy, Spain and Portugal
- The US heavyweight’s TV streaming service will land in the three southern European countries in October; it will exceed one million users by the end of the year and 7 million by 2020
In October 2015, Netflix will also start offering its TV streaming service in Italy, Spain and Portugal, as announced over the last few days by the US giant’s official memos. Netflix, which aims to be a "global company" by the end of next year, is already active in over 50 countries (Australia and New Zealand being the most recent acquisitions). It recorded 19.3 million international subscribers in the first quarter of 2015, in addition to the 40.3 million in the United States.
In a report published yesterday, an analyst from the Cowen Group, John Blackledge, estimates that in the three southern European countries where it is due to arrive in October, Netflix will reach 1.04 million subscribers by the end of 2015, with market penetration of 7% in the field of pay-TV subscribers. According to the analysis undertaken by the New York-based company, by 2020, the number of subscribers in the Italian, Spanish and Portuguese markets will have hit seven million.
In an interview with Wired Italia, president and CEO of Netflix Reed Hastings asserted that the price of the subscription to access the streaming service would be "in line with that of the other European countries". This would therefore entail a cost of €7.99 per month for TV series and films in high definition, as well as in Ultra HD 4K, on any screen with an internet connection.
