Art and Cinema in Cologne
The relationship between art, artists and cinema is the focus of a special film festival and art exhibition scheduled to take place in Cologne from 30 October to 3 November 2003. Organised by the City of Cologne, the Ludwig Museum and the North Rhine-Westphalia Art and Culture Foundation, the programme of this two-yearly event includes over sixty international films, many of which screening for the first time in Germany, as well as retrospectives from the film collection stored at the Pompidou Centre in Paris.
The artists featured in the video documentaries include Christian Boltanski, David Hockney, Annette Messager, Robert Morris, Orlan, Michael Snow and James Turrell and the event will open with the world premiere of a film about Paris-based artist, Gloria Friedmann, entitled Frau von Welt.
Titles include Gauguin by Alain Resnais, Love is the Devil, about Francis Bacon, directed by John Maybury, a tribute to Derek Jarman that includes Art of Mirrors (1973) and Caravaggio (1985) starring Tilda Swinton and Nigel Terry.
