Out of Competition - Vai e vem

by

- The final work of the great Portuguese director is a love letter to Cinema, produced by Paulo Branco

João César Monteiro clearly was not bothered by being being typecast as an independent filmmaker who always went his own way. Alone.
Vai e vem, his posthumous film presented out of competition in Cannes is his love letter to Cinema exemplified by his autobiographical passion for women and beauty. João Vuvu represents the evolution of João de Deus, a character we’ve come across in many of Monteiro’s films starting with his A Comédia de Deus in 1995. Vuvu spends his days lazing in the shade of his house in Lisbon in a cinematographic world of his own.
The film is a result of a co-production embarked upon by two companies headed up by Paulo Branco (who also stars in this film): Portugal’s Mandragoa Filmes and France’s Gemini Films (who are handling international sales).
This edition of Cannes has been particularly fruitful for Branco since 14 titles he produced were selected, six of which for the competition. Vai e vem was made with support form Portuguese pubcaster, RTP, Arte, France Cinéma and ICAM – the Portuguese National Film Institute.
