by Małgorzata Szumowska received the Grand Prix at the eighth CinÉast (Central and Eastern European Film Festival in Luxembourg), during a ceremony held on Friday night at the Luxembourg Cinémathèque. It is a fresh accolade for Szumowska, who also won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlinale earlier this year, among other prizes.

Director Ina Ivanceanu, one of the jurors, justified the jury’s decision by underlining the movie’s complex characters, its proximity to the surreal “without losing its grounding in reality” and its “subtle humour in the darkest hour”.

The Special Jury Prize went to Babai [+see also:

by László Nemes. “Nemes’ work is original and manages to drown the public in the hell of Auschwitz while avoiding all stereotypes and testing our imagination,” stated jury member Raul Antonio Reis. First revealed at Cannes last May, the film became the Hungarian entry for the Oscars and is being tipped by the international press as one of the favourites for the Academy Award.

by Ivaylo Hristov picked up the Audience Award. Hristov’s second film is a coming-of-age drama starring a talented new generation of Bulgarian actors.

After the awards ceremony on Friday night, CinÉast continued to screen some of the best productions made in Central and Eastern Europe until 25 October.
