Dutch director Marleen Gorris, who is most well-known for her films Antonia’s Line, which won her an Oscar in 1996, and and Mrs Dalloway (1997), which starred Vanessa Redgrave, started shooting Tulips yesterday in Apulia. The film is being produced by Corrado Azzollini’s Italian production company Draka Production in co-production with Han de Weers’ Dutch company Fatt Productions (which also produced Antonia’s Line) and Canadian company Don Carmody Productions.

Filming will take place over five weeks in Ginosa, Ruvo and Bari. Alongside The Dutch leads, Gijs Naber, Anneke Sluiters and Canadian actress Magda Apanowicz, the film will star a number of Italian actors: Donatella Finocchiaro, Lidia Vitale, Michele Venitucci, Giorgio Pasotti, Giancarlo Giannini, Totò Onnis and Mingo De Pasquale.

Tulips is a story of passion, a journey into Southern Italy during the 1950s and 1980s, a film about rediscovering your roots whilst also making your peace with the past. Anna travels to Apulia from Canada to bring home the ashes of her mother, who was from Apulia. Whilst there, she uncovers some unsettling truths about her family, who her real parents were and how, twenty-five years previously, they took a stand against the local mafia in field of tulips.

The film, which is being made with financial support from Apulia Film and the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, has secured funding from the European Eurimages Fund and €261,835 of support from the Netherlands Film Production Incentive. The film will be distributed in the Benelux countries by A-Film, an independent dstribution company based in Amsterdam which has experience in distributing both local productions, such as Black Book [+see also:
