film profile] (which was also premiered on the Croisette, in Un Certain Regard in 2013) boasts a cast comprising US star Natalie Portman, the young and very media-friendly actress Lily Rose Depp, Emmanuel Salinger, Pierre Salvadori and Louis Garrel.
The story revolves around Laura and Kate Barlow, two young spiritualist sisters who wind up their tour of Europe in Paris in the late 1930s. Running on empty, and having to face up to the competition posed by new practices, they meet André Korben, an influential film producer. Both visionary and controversial in equal measure, he has bought the biggest film studio in France, and draws his inspiration from American techniques, thanks to which his company avoids totally succumbing to the crisis. In order to put his scepticism to the test, and purely for the fun of it, Korben organises a private séance with the girls: he ends up being totally shocked. Bowled off his feet, he offers them an annual contract at his company to carry out some ambitious tests... He thinks to himself that if cinema is going to survive, it must be groundbreaking and take people by surprise: he tells himself he can make the first genuine ghost movie. But it isn’t long before Laura realises that Korben has other, more secretive reasons for hiring them. Together, they end up forming a strange family with increasingly blurry connections...
Produced by Frédéric Jouve for Les Films Velvet (a partner on all of the director’s films), Planetarium is being co-produced by Belgian outfit Les Films du Fleuve (the Dardenne brothers’ company), and is benefiting from backing from the CNC’s advance on receipts and support from the Ile-de-France region, where 35 of the shoot’s 45 days are being spent. The DoP is Georges Lechaptois, production design has been entrusted to Katia Wyskop (who garnered four nominations for the César Awards, and won in 2013 for Farewell My Queen [+see also:

film profile]), and the editing will be carried out by Julien Lacheray. Distribution in French theatres will be handled by Ad Vitam.
