There will once again be two ways to enjoy the fifth edition of Márgenes: online – through the festival’s website (its official section will be streamed free of charge, with the movies watchable between 13 and 31 December) – and in theatres in Barcelona, Córdoba, Mexico City, Monterrey, Montevideo, Santiago (Chile) and Madrid. The opening ceremony for this edition will be held tomorrow, 3 December, at the Cineteca in the Spanish capital, incorporating the screening of On Football [+see also:

film profile] and the handing-out of the Márgenes Special Award to actress Emma Suárez. Suárez, Pedro Almodóvar’s latest muse (read the news), is receiving the prize because she has been closely involved in independent film throughout her career.

The gathering – which boasts support from the ICAA, the Ministry of Culture, Acción Cultural Española, Camoes-Instituto da Cooperaçao e da Língua, and the Swiss, Argentinian and Portuguese embassies in Spain, among other organisations – will be offering films hailing from outside the mainstream circuit, such as the Spanish titles Transeúntes (by Luis Aller), Next (Elia Urquiza) and La extranjera (Miguel Ángel Blanca); Portuguese movies Revoluçao industrial (Frederico Lobo and Tiago Hespanha) and As cidades e as trocas (Luísa Homen and Pedro Pinho); and others from Mexico (Alexfilm, La maldad and Navajazo), Bolivia (The Corral and the Wind), Peru (Microbús), the Dominican Republic (Tú y Yo) and Argentina (La sombra).

At the same time, a retrospective of Portuguese filmmaker Manuel Mozos will be organised (on 9 and 10 December at the Cine Doré in Madrid) as well as the exhibition “En el barro, una aproximación al cine de José Celestino Campusano” (“In the Mud, an Analysis of the Films of José Celestino Campusano”, taking place from 15-19 December at La Casa Encendida) and MRG#WORK: Development and Production Meeting, a platform for dialogue designed to bring emerging filmmakers into contact with industry professionals interested in getting their projects off the ground (4 and 5 December, at Matadero Madrid).
