"We have come to the decision that we are long overdue in terms of paying special tribute to Sir Michael Caine. This recognition of an outstanding film personality comes from the bottom of our hearts and has only been presented twice in the almost 30 years of the European Film Awards: to our founding member Manoel de Oliveira and to Michel Piccoli,” as chairwoman of the EFA Board Agnieszka Holland and EFA president Wim Wenders stressed.

With a long and prolific career under his belt, which includes over 100 titles, Michael Caine has already won virtually every award there is for some of his most remarkable roles, such as the husband and lover in Hannah and Her Sisters by Woody Allen (which earned him his first Academy Award in 1986), the orphanage director in The Cider House Rules by Lasse Hallström (second Academy Award as a supporting actor in 1999), a university professor in Educating Rita (BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Actor in 1983), spy Harry Palmer in The Ipcress File (1965), gangster Charlie Croker in The Italian Job (1969), and some of his later appearances in blockbusters such as Interstellar [+see also:

by Matthew Vaughn, to name just a few.

Among his other distinctions, Michael Caine was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1992 Queen's Birthday Honours, and in the 2000 New Year Honours he was knighted under his real name: Maurice Micklewhite. by Fred Schepisi in 2001. Next Saturday, apart from accepting the Honorary Award of the EFA President and Board, he may also be holding aloft the EFA Award for Best Actor for his touching performance in Sorrentino’s feature, which leads the nominations in Berlin.
