by 78-year-old Claude Lelouch marks the filmmaker’s (A Man and a WomanBoleroItinerary of a Spoiled Child) return to favour among the country’s critics. Unveiled at Toronto, his new opus, starring Oscar winner Jean DujardinElsa ZylbersteinChristophe Lambert and Alice Pol, is a new twist on the theme of love, centring on a film-music composer who heads off to work in India and meets a woman who is nothing like him, but who attracts him more than anything.

“Today, we are inundated with love stories. Everything has been said, all the stories have been told, and what’s interesting is to dig deeper, to get to the bottom of things in order to adopt a different angle (...) Even when you think you have everything, love can show up and make you reconsider everything. This is the story of a man and a woman who already have partners when they first meet. She is head over heels in love with her ambassador, while he is madly in love with his pianist. You might think that they are somehow protected, but that’s not the case. There is no protection against love,” stresses Lelouch. “The more the characters are clear about the fact that they mustn’t live together, the more they feel like never parting again (...) There is always one of the pair who is running away from the other, and there is always one who is more in love than the other (...) I constructed the film like a match between a man and a woman who know full well that if they get together, they will be heading for disaster. But just as in life, that will not stop them from taking the plunge all the same!"

The film is produced by Films 13Davis Films and JD Prod with the collaboration of France 2 Cinéma, and sold internationally by Metropolitan Filmexport.
