Sonita headed for Sundance
- Iranian director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami’s film has been selected for the prestigious International Documentary Competition of the Sundance Film Festival
Sonita [+see also:
film profile], the latest documentary by Iranian director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami, will be one of the twelve films that will compete in the International Documentary Competition of the prestigious Sundance Film Festival (which will be held from 21 to 30 January).
The Germanic-Swiss-Iranian co-production had its world premiere last November in the international competition of the IDFA International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, where it took home two awards: the Audience Award and the Youth Jury’s DOC U Award. But that’s not all. Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami’s story, that of a young Afghan refugee who flees to Iran where she dreams of becoming a famous hip hop artist, also had the highest number of admissions at the IDFA Docs for Sale Market. An excellent start, boosted by the film being selected for the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
One of the architects of its success is Swiss producer Aline Schmid of Intermezzo Films, named one of the Producers on the move 2015, accompanied in the Swiss team by RTS Radio Télévision Suisse and SRG SSR. Completing the team of producers is German company Tag/Traum and the director herself, Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami.
A niche film that will most certainly continue to generate hype for some time to come.
