Seven European films shortlisted for Oscar Foreign Language category

It is yet another strong performance from Europe in the run up to the Oscars with seven out of nine films shortlisted for the Foreign Language Film category at the 88th Academy Awards being from the continent. The European films shortlisted are Jaco Van Dormael’s The Brand New Testament [+see also:

Eighty films were considered in the category. The nominations are determined in two phases. The Phase I committee, consisting of several hundred Los Angeles-based Academy members, screened the original submissions in the category between mid-October and December 14. The group’s top six choices, plus three additional selections voted by the Academy’s Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee, constitute the shortlist. Specially invited committees in New York, Los Angeles and London will narrow the shortlist down to five nominees. They will spend January 8 through January 10 viewing three films each day and then cast their ballots.
The 88th Academy Awards nominations will be announced January 14 and the Oscars will be held on February 28.
