film profile] by the young Tobias Nölle for the prestigious Panorama section of the Berlinale. Thirty films have been confirmed so far (two thirds of the programme) for the unmissable Berlin-based festival, which will take place in February.

Born in 1976 near Zurich, Tobias Nölle set off for New York to attend the School of Visual Arts  where he was obtained a BFA in Film. Together with a promising group of young Swiss directors (10 in total) he recently worked on the project Wonderland [+see also:

film profile], an ensemble film that portrays a lame Switzerland, dethroned and defenseless. The film competed at last year’s Locarno Film Festival where it won a number of awards, including the third Young Jury Prize. It also received the Zürcher Filmpreis and the Berner Filmpreis.

Aloys, Nölle’s first feature film, is about a fusional relationship, between a young son and his recently deceased father. Used to working with his father in the family investigative agency, Aloys suddenly finds himself all alone, abandoned to a routine comprised of long hours of ‘espionage’. Slowly but surely however, something seems to worm its way into his daily routine, turning his meticulously planned-out life upside down. The sense of security that’s always driven him seems to crumble away little by little. Aloys is brougt to life by Austrian actor Georg Friedrich, a regular at the Berlinale where he was crowned Shooting Star in 2004. A most promising debut for a director it will be worth keeping a close eye on.
