In Italy, the film industry has an economic value of €1.7 billion and employs 74,014 people. This is laid out in the “Creative Italy” study carried out by Ernst & Young, with the support of all of the main associations in the cultural sector, headed up by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and SIAE (the Italian Society of Authors and Publishers). The study – which covers performing and visual arts, film, books, music, advertising, newspapers, radio, TV and home entertainment, and videogames – was introduced yesterday at the Triennale di Milano museum, in the presence of the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, Dario Franceschini, and the president of SIAE, Filippo Sugar. Representing the film industry was Francesca Cima, of Indigo Film, who is also currently the president of ANICA Producers.

In 2014, the overall economic value of the Italian cultural and creative industry, as outlined in the study, amounted to €47 billion, or 2.9% of the country’s gross national product. The effect is even more substantial when we examine occupations: the industry employs almost one million workers in total. Furthermore, 41% of those employed in these sectors are young people between 15 and 39 years old, as against an average of around 37% across all sectors of the Italian economy.

“In Europe, the creative sector is worth between 3.1% and 3.5% of the GNP,” explained the CEO of Ernst & Young in Italy, Donato Iacovone, adding, “The Italian creative industry has an enormous amount of room for growth, especially with regard to the employment of young people and women; in fact, it could end up creating 300,000 new jobs.”

“Marrying the advantages of the digital era with Italian creativity can give an incredible boost to both employment and the economy,” stated Franceschini. “It is our duty to guarantee fair market conditions, fight piracy and counterfeiting, and acknowledge a fair degree of compensation for those who work and invest their own talent in the sector.”
