2015: 11 million admissions in Romanian cinemas
Radu Jude’s Aferim! was the most popular domestic release of 2015

2014 was the first year of this millennium when the total number of admissions in Romanian cinemas surpassed 10 million, and the growth did not stop in 2015: 11,110,400 tickets were sold over the 52 weeks of the year, according to the country’s most popular cinema website, Cinemagia.ro.

In terms of admissions, growth amounts to 8.71% when compared to 2014. Earnings totalled €47.19 million, which is a 12.65% increase on 2014 (€41.89 million). The average ticket price increased from €4.12 in 2014 to €4.25 in 2015, and the number of films released in cinemas did not change: 202 for both years.

Romanians were not conquered by Star Wars mania: JJ Abrams’ blockbuster was forced to bow to Furious 7, which broke several box-office records and was watched by more than 650,000 cinemagoers. Although it had the widest release ever in Romania (182 screens), Star Wars VII has sold only 587,000 tickets since its December release (January 2016 admissions included). Other popular releases were Minions (434,000 admissions), Spectre [+see also:

(328,000) and Fifty Shades of Grey (317,000). 2015 was the first year when more than five films surpassed 300,000 admissions (only two films did so in 2014, and only one in 2013).

Spectre may have been a huge success in Romania, but other European films fared less well: among the most popular were Kingsman: The Secret Service [+see also:
