Richard Miller sacked
Following last 18 May elections, the new Federal government of Belgium is still being set up but some important changes at the top have already been made. The first of which is the sacking of Richard Miller, Federal Minister for Culture, the Arts and Audiovisual Affairs. The news was announced by Daniel Ducarme, the founding president of the MR party who said that M. Miller would return to his former post as deputy councillor for financial affairs in Mons, as of 6 June.
Richard Miller was a minister since 17 October 2000 and enjoyed having responsibility for cultural affairs and cinema, however he was sorely criticised for several strategic blunders like the purchase of the Cinéma Palace that he then turned into a theatre, or the allegedely unjustified purchase of a theatre in Avignon. On the positive side, Miller oversaw the introduction of Belgium’s audiovisual decree, the management contract and the RTBF decree and the creation of the AB3 network that effectively brought to an end the RTBF/RTL-TVI monopoly.
