An authentic David-and-Goliath scenario was played out at the US box office this weekend when new entry, Respiro [+see also:

film profile], the directorial debut of Italy’s Emanuele Crialese and produced by Fandango, scored the highest per screen average. Released on 23 May onto just 7 US screens by Sony Pictures Classics, Respiro took $14,803 against Matrix Reloaded’s $12,665 (on 3,483 screens however).
According to this data, Respiro came 15th in the weekend’s Top 20 best performing titles.
