EVENTS Italy

Sixty of the best

by

An eclectic selection of classics and contemporary films will screen concurrently with Italy’s rotating presidency of the European Union (July-December 2003) at this year’s edition of Belgium’s Europalia Festival (9-14 October), dedicated entirely to Italian Cinema: Past and Present.
The programme includes over 60 films in three distinct sections: The Laurels of Italian Cinema, organised with Cinecittà Holding – showcasing Italian films that won major international awards (Golden Lion, Palme d’Or, Golden Bears and Oscars) from 1946 to the present day; Cinema d’Oggi organised by Italia Cinema, dedicated to the best films of 2002-2003, especially by younger directors, and Tribute to Luchino Visconti featuring his entire body of work that was restored to its original glory by the National Film School. Incidentally it was Visconti’s The Damned that inaugurated Europalia in 1969.
The event will open with a gala screening of Pupi Avati’s Il cuore altrove, presented by Neri Marcoré, Vanessa Incontrada and Avati himself.
